About Mental Performance Consulting

  • Mental Performance Consulting takes sport and performance psychology and applies it in practice with clients.

A common misconception is that sport and performance psychology exists only to help elite athletes. In reality, sport and performance psychology professionals support people at every age and across a variety of performance contexts, including the following:

    • Sport (athletes and coaches)

    • Health and Wellbeing (persons of all ages and activity levels)

    • Performing Arts (dancers and musicians)

    • Tactical and Occupational Performance (surgeons, firefighters, search and rescue, paramedics, police, military)

    • Business (managers, executives)

  • A CMPC is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant®. This credential is the only nationally accredited certification for mental performance professionals in the Canada and the United States.

CMPCs are recognized for their expertise and ethical practice to help performers reduce performance anxiety, improve concentration and communication, build confidence, set goals, and more.

Jay is currently in the process of completing his application to write the CMPC exam and hopes to achieve the credential by the end of the calendar year.

  • Mental Performance Consulting can help improve your life through the skills and tools you can learn and the therapeutic approaches that can help facilitate long-term and sustainable growth.

  • Some of the skills and competencies that Jay can help you develop include self-talk, motivation, confidence and time management among many others. There are several tools and techniques available to help you achieve your goals and gain a better understanding of yourself. You drive the sessions, with what you want to focus on, and what you want to get out of the time working with Jay. Making lasting change is not something that happens with a “quick fix”, but gradually builds over time. Jay can help you facilitate this change and development, but it is ultimately up to you to do the work needed to grow and make lasting change.

  • Mental Performance Consulting can benefit you at all ages and stages of life! Reflection and self-awareness are significant components to long-term growth and success with a mental skills program, so the younger end of the age bracket can vary based on the individual. On the other end of the spectrum, if someone is looking to improve an area of their life or performance, I am happy to work with them at any age!

If you think you have a child who would benefit from working with me, typically those around 12 years old at the younger end of the spectrum can still be effective, however I have worked with clients as young as 8 years old.

If you are curious, please reach out and we can discuss in a complimentary introduction session and set up a plan from there.

  • If you aren't sure, please reach out for a complimentary intro session. We can talk through what your thoughts and concerns are, and I can let you know how I might be able to help or let you know that what you are looking for is outside my scope of practice. In that case, I am happy to help direct you to the appropriate service to help you reach your goals!

  • I'm sorry that your previous experience was not a positive one!

Just like everyone has had teachers, coworkers, coaches, and peers who they work better with than others, the same is true here.

I would encourage you to give me a chance due to my expertise and experience in formal and informal contexts in helping people achieve their goals. I strive to make a difference and help you make the lasting changes for sustained success, however you define success.

If you feel like it is not working with me, I am happy to connect you with another expert in the field who could be a better fit for you. I would rather you achieve your goals with the support of someone else, then get nowhere working with me!

  • Mental Performance Consultants can support your performance goals, as well as work with you to enhance your psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Please note that MPCs are not permitted to treat or diagnose mental illnesses (ex. depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, etc.). Although I have obtained my Mental Health First Aid Certification, I am not a certified or dually trained mental health practitioner.

Should you decide over the course of our working relationship that you would be interested in or may benefit from working with a mental health practitioner, I would be happy to support you throughout this process. This support may include:

    1. Referring you to a sport-specific or general mental health practitioner

    2. Working collaboratively with your mental health practitioner (with your consent), or

    3. At your discretion, pause our sessions so that you may work with your mental health practitioner until such a time that you feel ready and/or are able to resume mental performance sessions

  • If you are having a psychological emergency or crisis, you should follow one of these options: call 911, go to the nearest hospital emergency room, call an emergency hotline, call your family physician, and/or call a significant other (e.g., family member, partner). Please feel free to reach out to me and I will provide whatever assistance I can, however, I am not trained or qualified to provide care in a psychological emergency. What I can do is support you and help to connect you with those who are trained and qualified.
